India has a rich linguistic heritage. Regional languages in India play vital roles in different aspects. Since time immemorial, Indian languages have coexisted, complemented and enriched each other, thus contributing to the unity and harmony of the nation. 

In order to strengthen language harmony, develop a conducive environment for learning more Indian languages, enhance linguistic tolerance and respect for all, Indian School Salalah celebrated “Bhartiya Bhasha Utsav 2023-2024” with great enthusiasm as per the directives received from the Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education, Government of India. All the activities to mark the celebration were meticulously planned and executed by H.O.Ds and teachers of Department of Hindi, Department of Malayalam and Department of Tamil of Indian School Salalah.

The theme for this year’s celebration was  Bhartiya Bhasha Utsav was a 75 days long event spanning from 28th September to 11th December, 2023 to promote language learning through the use of regional languages and technology. The Bhartiya Bhasha Utsav at Indian School Salalah was celebrated in Hindi, Malayalam and Tamil languages. During this Bhasha Utsav various activities were conducted across all levels. It was tailored to justify the theme and to provide multilingual exposure to students in Indian languages.  

ACTIVITIES:

The highlights of Bhasha Utsav Celebration included Poster making on theme ‘Environment/ Nature’, Self-composed poem recitation in Hindi, Malayalam and Tamil, Sharing delicacies of regions they represented under theme of ‘Cuisine’, special assembly was conducted where students gave speech in all the above mentioned regional languages on the theme ‘Know your surroundings’, on the spot self-composed poem writing competition on the theme ‘My School’, a thought provoking skit on  theme ‘Values’, a quiz on numbers in regional languages on the theme ‘Numeracy and Mathematics’. Activities were also conducted on various themes like ‘Show your talent’, ‘My thoughts, My ideas’, ‘Reading & Expression’ and the activities of whole last week were dedicated to the readings, writings and poetries of Shri Subramania Bharati, the great nationalist Tamil poet who was popularly known as ‘Mahakavi Bharti’, a freedom fighter and a social reformer in Tamil Nadu.

CULMINATION EVENT – The culmination of the 75 days long event was celebrated on 11th December 2023 at the school premises. Dr. Aboobacker Siddique, President of school management committee, Principal Mr. Deepak Patankar, Vice principal Mr. Mammikutty, AVPs Mr. Vipin Das and Mrs. Anita Rose graced the occasion with their esteemed presence. Students of grade VIII were audience for the event. Dr. Abubacker Siddique greeted all the students on this momentous occasion in different languages i.e. Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam. He appreciated the efforts taken by HODs, teachers and students throughout these 75days long event of Bhartiya Bhasha Utsav till the final culmination celebration on 11th December 2023.

The event commenced with a soulful prayer song, “Manathil Urudhi Vendum”, invoking positive energy and setting the tone for the celebration. Miss Nandini Khambhattha 8F delivered a formal welcome address and Master Sidarth Jayaprakash 8B gave a speech narrating the reason behind choosing the birth anniversary of “Mahakavi Subramania Bharati” in depth. ‘Observing his Jayanti as “Bharatiya Bhasha Utsav Culmination” would once again strengthen the national unity.” he added. Following this a visually engaging video was screened showcasing the cultural diversity of India. It gave an extensive exploration to myriad of facets of different parts of India including linguistic diversity, visual arts, musical expressions, dance forms and gastronomy fostering a harmonious celebration of diversity.

Students of classes V and VI performed a lively Tamil Action song “Odi Vilayadu Papa” which encouraged students to adapt a healthy lifestyle and work together as a team. Following it a folk performance “Katha Prasangam” – a musical narrative in Malayalam succeeded in sensitizing everyone on life and contributions of Subramaniya Bharati in freedom struggle as well as to literature. Soulful rendition of a poem composed by Subrmaniya Bharati was done in Tamil by Kavin Revanth 7I and same poem in Hindi was done by Anandita Singh 7F. A group song in Malayalam by students of class VI, VII, VIII emphasized the significance of moral values in one's life, promoting ethical behavior and character development among the students. The major highlight of the day was the dance performance on song "Mile Sur Mera Tumhara" where students dressed up in traditional costumes representing different states of India maneuvering that it has a rich linguistic heritage and visualizing Indian languages as a great tool for national unity. It was a visual delight to witness students adorned in an array of captivating costumes creating a vibrant spectacle for the eyes.  The compering team members for the event were Miss. Darshini Srigandh 6I and Miss. Sheza Arshad 8B for Tamil, Miss. Aleena Aneesh 8E for Malayalam and Miss. Yuvika 6B for Hindi                                            

Mr. Bala Subramaniam H.O.D Department of Hindi formally proposed the vote of thanks to all the guests for their presence as it exuded a compelling sense of motivation and inspiration for all. He further extended his heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Shaji - H.O.D Malayalam Department, Mrs. Anandhi for her contribution in Tamil and all teachers of Hindi Department, Malayalam Department and students at large for making this event a grand success.

The whole event highlighted the linguistic and cultural diversity of India, promoting unity and fostering a sense of pride in our rich heritage. The performances and activities in the final culmination celebration showcased the contributions of Subramaniya Bharathi and emphasized the importance of preserving and promoting linguistic diversity in our society. Celebrations such as these promote greater cultural awareness and inclusivity among individuals, it also broadens their vision in life.

Students who have opted for Hindi, Malayalam and Tamil as second language and third language actively participated in all these activities. These activities gave students both a sense of unity and appreciation of the beautiful linguistic heritage and diversity of India. To sum it up, the revival of regional languages in India is crucial as it connects people with their roots and heritage and also helps to preserve our cultural diversity.
